Humans have a biological need for relationships. Relationships ensure reproduction, cooperation, raising offspring > evolutionary basis. We satisfy our friendships with a select limited number of people. Once need to belong is satisfied, we don"t seek more. Experiment: monkey kept in isolation from other monkey displayed social problems in adolescence. Single, divorced, widowed people had more psychological problems, higher crime rates, suicide rates. Communal relationship = a relationship in which the individuals feel a special responsibility for one another and give and receive according to the principle of need; such relationships are often long term. Exchange relationship = a relationship in which individuals feel little responsibility toward one another; giving and receiving are governed by concerns about equity and reciprocity; such relationships are usually short term. E. g. salespeople, bureaucrats, workers, supervisors in business organizations. Rewards and the social exchange theory of interpersonal relationships. Relationships are based on some sort of reward. To get people to like you, reward them.
