More narcissists than ever, and non-narcs are seduced by the increasing emphasis on material wealth, physical appearance, celebrity worship and attention seeking. 37000 college students sample: narc personality trait rose just as fast as obesity (especially pronounced shift for women). By 2006, 1 out of 4 students agree with most items on a standard narc. scale the clinical severe version is also more common than ever (narcissistic personality disorder (npd) measure). Narc. is a psychological cultural affliction rather than a physical disease, but same model applies (which is what the book uses) The mortgage meltdown in 2008 was caused in part by narc over-confidence of homebuyers who claimed they could afford houses too expensive for them, and greedy lenders who were willing to take big risks.
