PSYC 337 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Task Analysis, Clonidine, Dual Diagnosis
Document Summary
Until 1980"s, emotional and behavioural difficulties were attributed to lower intelligence and psychosocial problems rather than psychiatric disorder. Diagnostic overshadowing= perceiving deviant behaviours as a function of the developmental disorder causes real disorders to be missed. People with intellectual disabilities are at inc risk to develop emotional and behavioural problems similar to psychiatric disorder. They can develop all types of disorders, including less common ones. Those with syndromes such as fragile x or autism are at high risk. Dual diagnosis= co-occurrence of serious behavioural/psychiatric disorder in intellectually disabled people. Those with dual diagnosis have not been given a formal diagnosis but 40% of them receive medication, counselling or therapy for behavioural challenges. Survey of intellectually disabled individuals found aberrant behaviour in 52. 9% of children between ages 4-11, and 46. 8% in adolescents/adults. Most freq behaviours are inadequate self control/anger control, attention deficit, withdrawal, toileting problems and pica (eating inedible substances) Intensity of behaviour varied depending on age and sex.
