PSYC 410 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Visual Search, Superior Colliculus, Posterior Cerebral Artery
Document Summary
Characterized by a failure of awareness on a side of space/body. Sometimes accompanied by drowsiness and processing delay low (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) attention, vigilance/arousal. Multimodal: visual, tactile, auditory stimuli; motor representations. May be associated with problems with insight: Hemisomatognosia: lack of recognition of weakness somatoparaphrenia: attributing touches to body to someone else"s body (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Mismatch between location of stroke and symptoms: hemispatial (cid:1) neglect reflects not only structural damage, but also metabolic or neural disruptions, provoked by the stroke on distributed cortical/subcortical systems (cid:1) Negative (failure of detection/response to stimuli on x side of visual field or reluctance to use x arm for exploration manipulation) Positive deficits: automatic attraction to stimuli on y side, rotational bias (not only during movement, at rest also) Bias can be modified (forcing to look at neglected side with (cid:1) information), differs from other neurologic deficits that cannot fluctuate in severity. Patients can lessen neglect by voluntarily directing attention/actions toward neglected side.
