SOCIOL 2Q06 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Dollar Sign, Job Performance, Occupational Segregation
Document Summary
The male work-role model works well for business, industry, and government; work as an institution is not family-friendly. Work exerts an independent influence on gender, and is at the root of many tensions in gender relations. Over the 20th century, male labour force participation rates gradually dropped, while rates for women soared. The decline in male employment has been a consequence of a number of factors foremost being the growing tendency of men in their mid- to late fifties to take early retirement, or accept buy-outs from employers. Young men have been delaying their entry into the labour market by staying in school longer to attain higher credentials. The change in women"s labour-force participation rates is attributable to a combination of factors: changing opportunities in canada"s occupational structure, inflationary pressures necessitating higher family incomes, changing gender expectations and beliefs about employment, marriage, parenthood, parenting.
