Four levels of courts dealing with criminal cases. Judges at provincial level are appointed by federal government. Lowest level, nearly all criminal cases are here. Older, caucasian men are overrepresented in the court system. An offence that can be proceeded summarily or by indictment - decision made by crown. A hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to warrant a criminal trial. Bail and role of police in granting bail. Or bail; is the release by a judge or jp of a person who has been charged with a criminal offence pending a court appearance. Jp unless release was authorized when warrant was issued. Ex, offense happened when they were on bail for another charge if jp or judge decides or release the accused the conditions under which release will take place must be determined. Accused persons may have to give up passport, report to police periodically, be monitored by a reasonable person etc.
