DST 500 Chapter Notes - Chapter Articles: White Supremacy, Anti-Psychiatry, Medical Model
Document Summary
Take it public: use art to make healing a public narrative. Mother forced to take drugs for schizophrenia so that she could be a suitable mother; after a suicide attempt while on these drugs, turned to art. Medical model shows what is normal and what is illness, dominant social narrative, however outcomes for those diagnosed with mental illness are no better today. According to post modern perspectives, creating change has to do with directing attention. Anti-psychiatry literature validated rage felt but fell short of telling how to make sense of it and let the rage go. Working through art led to a story of being abused, rageful and then healing; preferred over the earlier story of suffering from mental illness. Healing involves an improved sense of well-being and is different from curing a disease. When the belief that illness diagnoses and treatments are justified is combined with stigma, it becomes nearly impossible to overcome.
