RTA 210 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Reginald Fessenden, Morning Zoo, Todd Storz
Document Summary
Variety programming is the broadest form of entertainment. It contains a series of dissimilar elements, often music and comedy mixed with a variation of drama, acts, dance or interviews. The program was often held together by one or two central characters that acted as a sort of master of ceremonies . Variety media had a key role in the development of modern entertainment, as it was an approachable, diverse means of engaging an audience with a new technology. Since targeted radio was not an option until much later in the century, producers had to include content to reach as broad an audience as possible. This irreverent style of radio broadcast pertains to the type of comedic content that is often heard on morning radio. It showcases pranks, jokes or humorous interviews in between songs. The mix of music and comedy is a formula that has been applied for a century, and contributed to the appeal of radio.
