Planning: the process of setting objectives and determining how to best accomplish them. Objectives: identify the specific results or desired outcomes that one intends to achieve. Plan: a statement of action steps to be taken in order to accomplish the objectives. The best planning is done with the active participation of those people whose work efforts will eventually determine whether or not the plans are well implemented. The roles of planning and controlling in the management process are shown on the right. Planning keeps the future visible as a performance target.
