Document Summary
Self-concept incompatibility reinforced by gendered perceptions held by family, friends and media. Individuals have different self (personal traits), relational self (interpersonal relations) and collective self (membership in identifiable social groups) Three characteristics of an individual"s self-concept: complexity: the number of distinct and important roles or identities that people perceive about themselves. Everyone has some complexity because they perceive themselves in different roles at different times. Confident with who they are, can describe important identities to others and provide same description of themselves across time. Increases with age and consistency of multiple selves. Effects of self-concept characteristics on well-being and behaviour. High complexity allows people to have better psychological well-being when they have multiple selves that are well-established (clarity) and similar to each other and compatible with personal traits (consistency) Complexity protects self esteem when roles are threatened or damaged. Consistency helps adapt to internal tension and conflict.
