Posterior thoracic landmarks: feel for the c7 and t1 vertebra prominens, spinouse processes only allign with their same numbered ribs only down to t4, after that the spinous processes angle downward from the vertebral bodies. Infeior border of the scapula: 12th rib- palpate midway btwn spine and pt"s side to identify the free tip of the twelth rib. Ie: pco2 is a vasodilator for the brain blood vessels -- reduction could lead to feeling faint. Increase in residual vol ( amt of air remaining in the lungs after forceful expiration: less number of alveoli-- ie: less sa for gas exchange then, changes increase their risk for post op pulmonary complications. Subjective data: cough, shortness of breath, chest pain with breathing, history of respiratory infections, smoking history, environmental exposure, self care behaviours -- latest tb skin test, chest radiographic study, pneumonia mmunization or influenza immunization.
