PHL 366 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Existentialism
Document Summary
We don"t know if the world has a meaning. What we do know, is that we don"t know if it does or not; that it is impossible for us to know if it does. Being among another species would give us meaning; we would be part of the world. Man does not want to do anything but what he understands. Sin of pride; however, he does not understand the notion of sin. So, man lives solely with what he knows and does not bring in anything that is not certain. While we used to ask if life is worth living or not without meaning, we come to find that life is better lived if it has no meaning. Living an experience is accepting it fully. However, we know this to be absurd. So, we have to keep the absurd from becoming conscious. Absurd dies only when we turn away from it. However, we cannot live without the absurd.
