Simone de beauvoir - personal freedom and others. Descartes says man"s unhappiness is due to him being a child first. Our unfortunate choices usually have a basis in childhood. Child"s situation is characterized by the fact that they are put into a world which was made long before them and which appears to be a absolute in which he can only submit. Human inventions, words, customs, values are seen as given facts to the child, like the sky and the trees. Characteristic of seriousness is to consider values as ready-made. Does not make the child himself serious. Children feel free to pursue and attain goals that they set for themselves. If he fulfills this experience peacefully, it is because the domain open to his subjectivity seems insignificant. Real world of adults, children are expected to respect and obey. He believes in the being of his parents and teachers. Takes them as divinities (as they try to be)
