Document Summary
William james is always regarded as founder of american psychology. Psychology: scientific study of mind, brain and behavior, discipline that spans 1+ level of analysis: social culture influences (social behavioral level) Involve relating to others and personal relationship: psychological (mental and neurological level) Involves thoughts, feelings, emotions: biological level (such as molecules, brain structure) Scientific psychology doesn"t rely exclusively on intuition/common sense. 5 challenges of psychology: human behavior is difficult to predict. All actions are multiply determined (caused by number of factors) Beware of single variable explanations, could be caused by multiple variables: psychological influences are rarely independent of each other. Difficult to pin down and identify major cause or treat them as contribute factors interrelated: people differ in thinking, emotion, personality and behavior. Individual differences explain why we respond differently. Difficult to come up with explanation that applies to all: people often influence each other.
