PSY 324 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Major Depressive Disorder, Postpartum Depression, Serotonin Transporter
Document Summary
Chapter 15 mood disorders (only module 5. 1) Mental illness outcomes that combine biological predispositions with experiences. Feeling of sad and helpless every day for weeks at a time. Little energy, feel worthless, contemplate suicide, have trouble sleeping, cannot concentrate, find little pleasure. There are no laboratory tests to confirm a diagnosis for depression. Childhood depression is common for both m+f, but more for f after age 14. Long-term depression = not depression all the time, but periods/episodes of depression + normal mood etc. For people with two short forms of the serotonin transporter gene, increasing numbers of stressful experiences lead to a big increase in the probability of depression as opposed to two long forms of the gene and l/s gene. *failure to replicate this result and thus no interaction . Borna disease (viral infection of farm animals) is linked to humans with major depression/bipolar disorder. Postpartum depression common in 20% of women after child birth hormonal fluctuations.
