Document Summary

These are chronic changes in the heart and arteries: cardiac and cerebrovascular conditions. Atherosclerosis: fatty deposits collect at an abnormally high rate, which substantially reduces the width of the arteries and decreases circulation. Arteriosclerosis: the thickening and hardening of arteries, which also occurs to some degree in normal aging. Many people can have this, but not have significant health problems if it does not cause blockage in the arteries. Coronary heart disease: occurs when arteries leading to the heart muscle have blockage and cannot supply enough blood to the heart. Myocardial infarction: the acute condition when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle (the myocardium) is severely reduced or blocked. Hypertension: the disease in which an individual chronically suffers from blood pressure that is greater than or equal to 140mm hg systolic pressure and 90 mm hg diastolic pressure. Changes in the arteries associated with atherosclerosis are thought to be due to the damaging effects of hypertension.
