Substance use often considered later-occurring part of larger externalizing/disruptive behaviour construct. Disruptive behaviour disorders (cd and odd) most likely disorders to be associated with youth substance use. Imperative to differentiate between time-limited patterns of experimentation or lesser use that are developmentally normative and patterns that may have serious short- and long-term ramifications. Dsm-v category of substance-related and addictive disorders: describes pathological uses of 10 classes of substances; gambling disorder also included (all of which presumed to have in common the direct activation of brain reward systems) Substance use disorders: involve a pattern of behavioural, cognitive, and physiological symptoms that indicate person"s continual use despite sizeable substance-related problems. Substance-induced disorders: conditions of intoxication, withdrawal, and other mental disorders (e. g. depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar, and related disorders) that are due to recent use of certain substance. Diagnostic criteria used to describe symptomatic pattern characteristic of substance use disorders cluster into four groups:
