Common theme=change in the coverage of an issue over time. Coding may reflect the researcher"s interests and concerns and be a product of subjective bias to some degree. Usually interested in a much larger number of variables. Counting of particular words can reveal emphasis, style of writing, presentation or overplaying of certain events. Variation on search for individual keywords is the search for pairings of keywords. Search for pairings of keywords can be a starting point for a more in-depth analysis. Occurs if researcher wants to probe beneath the surface to ask deeper questions about what is happening. When researcher is seeking to demonstrate that the writer of particular texts has taken a certain value position. Can be revealed through coding of ideologies, beliefs and principles. Two main elements: designing a coding schedule and creating a coding manual. Codes can be transferred to a computer data file for analysis with a software package such as spss.
