The males had the right to exercise physical force on his wife and children. Only resultant death and injury led to public complaints. Social legitimation of intimate abuse was questioned. Temperance movement: linked male drunkenness to domestic violence. These efforts failed to end the legitimation of domestic abuse however few legal reforms were initiated.
