CRIM 131 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Drug Courts In The United States, The Courtroom, Gambling
Document Summary
The reason for the courts being a mystery to some canadians is due to the fact that lawyer, crown counsels, and judges are much less visible than that of a police officer. The courts are responsible for determining the guilt or innocence of accused persons and for imposing an appropriate sentence to those who are convicted. They are also responsible for ensuring that the rights of persons are protected. The principle of judicial independence is viewed as essential to the proper functioning of the courts. Citizens have the right to have their cases tried by tribunals that are fair, impartial, and immune from political interference. Canada does not have a uniform court system. With the exception of nunavut, canadian jurisdiction has 4 levels of courts that deal with criminal cases: Nunavut has unified or single level court, the nunavut court of justice.
