Population - refers to all cases/observations of interest to us. Sample - subset of cases/observations from population. Sampling frame - list from which sample will be selected. Sample frame - represents operational definition of population. In principle, population is entire currently enrolled in student body. In practice, population operationally defined by names on registrar"s list. Representative sample - reflects important characteristics of population. Nonrepresentative - does not reflect important characteristics of population. Survey"s cooperation rate - represents percentage of indivs/hoesholds/other units participating in survey out of all those contacted. Response rate - represents percentage of cases who participate in survey out of all those selected to participate. Basic researchers conduct surveys to advance scientific knowledge about human behaviour. Applied researchers collect survey data to address practical issues. Surveys give ppl a voice & inform public. Data from representative samples permit reasonable estimates about entire populations.
