PSYC 379 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Sex Offender, Sex And The Law, Adolescent Sex
Document Summary
The characteristics of persistent sexual offenders: a meta-analysis of recidivism studies (hanson & morton-bourgon, 2005) The nature of sexual crimes is very concerning to the public. It is estimated that 1-2% of the male population will commit a sex crime and 10-15% of offenders will reoffend within 5 years. Recidivism studies are done to determine risk factors for sexual offenders. Past studies have found that the risk factors are static. Static factors are useful in predicting long term recidivism risk but in order to understand the risk of recidivism they need to focus on dynamic factors (causal psychological risk factors). This study was looking to update past data and look to those dynamic factors as a means to better understand why re-offending occurs and how to manage those individuals who are more likely to reoffend. It is important to know that the predictors for sexual offenders are different than for nonsexual re-offending.
