Document Summary

Deterrence is the use of punishment as as threat/limiter for people to deter and not commit what is unwanted. Deterrence is effective because for example most people will not deliberately park where you know you will be towed. When police go on strike crime has risen which goes to prove that deterrence is effective. Law and order politicians believe that the best way to reduce crime is to hand down longer prison sentences. This is a problem because although it may be easier for governments to pass tougher sentencing, the most important thing to do is increase the certainty of punishment.
