Children develop a sense of right and wrong earlier than freud thought (reality) by end of 3nd year children display signs of shame and guilt. Culture restricts id"s search for pleasure and freedom. Personal conscious reflects our unique experiences and conflicts, distinguishes and makes us unique. Personal unconsciousness consists of forgotten/repressed memories that were once conscious. While collective unconscious: shared experiences that make us similar to everyone else (dreams symbols reappearing). Collective unconscious accounts for seemingly spiritual influences, it is inherited. Mental illness reflects a fragmented self where there are several incomplete personalities lurking in the unconscious. Archetypes: symbols that reflect our instincts and how they are expressed.
