Document Summary
Development - orderly, adaptive changes that humans (or animals) go through from conception to death. Development does not apply to temporary change (such as a brief illness) Physical development - changes in body structure that take place as one grows. Social development - changes over time in the ways in which we relate to others. Personal development - changes in personality that can take place as one grows. Cognitive development - gradual, orderly changes by which mental processes become more complex and sophisticated. Maturation - changes that are genetically programmed and naturally occuring over time. Cognitive development relates to thinking, reasoning, and decision making. Genetic changes emerge over time and are relatively unaffected by environment (the only exception is extreme environmental conditions like malnutrition) Changes from learning and environmental interactions make up a lot of social development. The nature vs nurture debate is present with thinking and personality, we aren"t sure where each fits specifically.
