Students: a few of you wrote to me with questions about some of the more complicated vocabulary in the jones & schieffelin article for this week"s lectures. I"m aware it was a challenging reading but don"t stress! This gives us some building blocks to have a lot of fun thinking about language and how we use it. Don"t worry too much about understanding these terms; in lecture i"ll go over the main points of the article and let you know which of these concepts you should know. However, for those of you who really wanted to understand these concepts i"ve put together a brief glossary of some of the linguistic terminology the article uses. I hope this helps if you were struggling to understand parts of it. I"ve tried to do so in the order in which these words appear in the article (page numbers below refer to the pages in the jones & schieffelin reading where terms first appeared).
