Chapter 9: social and community characteristics and their influence on health. Social and community networks are primarily concerned with interactions bw groups of people/organizations/institutions. Social support: information leading the subject to believe they are cared for and loved, is esteemed and valued and belongs to a social network of communication and mutual obligation. Social networks can be analyzed in terms of the number of people in the network, frequency of contacts and the types of support that can be given. House (1981) characterizes four types of social support that also assess not just the structure of the network but the quality of the network: One extremely important element of social support for health is that of reciprocity where you not only receive social support but you also give social support. Large body of evidence exists showing the link bw having larger networks and perceived supportive relationships and better health outcomes for physical and mental health.
