Document Summary
Motivation: concerns the physiological & psychological processes underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct us toward goals. Drive: a biologi(cid:272)al t(cid:396)igge(cid:396) that tells us (cid:449)e"(cid:396)e be deprived of something and causes us to seek out what is needed. When a drive is satisfied, reward centres in our brains become activated. Homeostasis: the (cid:271)od(cid:455)"s ph(cid:455)siological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment. Allostasis: motivation is not only influenced by current needs, but also by the anticipation of future needs. The (cid:862)o(cid:374)(cid:863) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)off(cid:863) switches involved in hunger can be found in a few regions of the hypothalamus. Stimulating the lateral hypothalamus caused rats to begin to eat (cid:894)(cid:862)o(cid:374)(cid:863) s(cid:449)it(cid:272)h(cid:895) (cid:449)hile, stimulating the ventromedial region of the hypothalamus causes rats to stop eating. Damaging the ventromedial region removes the (cid:862)off s(cid:449)it(cid:272)h(cid:863) i(cid:374) the (cid:271)(cid:396)ai(cid:374). The activity of the hypothalamus is influenced by hormones released in response to the energy needs of the body.
