Developmental psychology is the study of continuity and change across the life span, Zygote is a fertilized egg that contains chromosomes from both a sperm and an egg. If the egg is fertilized by a sperm that carries a y chromosome, then the zygote is male; if the egg is fertilized by a sperm that carries an x chromosome, the zygote is female. The 2-week period that begins at conception is known as the germinal stage, and it is during this stage that the one-celled zygote begins to divide.
