Document Summary
Learning - process by which behavior or knowledge changes as a result of experience. Classical conditioning learning that occurs when neutral stimulus elicits a response that was originally caused by another stimulus. (behaviorism) Unconditioned stimulus (us)- stimulus that elicits a re exive response without learning. Unconditioned response (ur)- re exive, unlearned reaction to an unconditioned stimulus. Conditioned stimulus (cs) - once- neutral stimulus that later elicits a conditioned response because it has a history of being paired with an unconditioned stimulus. Conditioned response (cr) - learned response that occurs to conditioned stimulus. Acquisition - initial phase of learning in which a response is established. Example: activity of cells in amygdala steadily increases as animals are conditioned with either an electrical shock. Extinction - loss or weakening of a conditioned response when a conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus no longer occur together: rate of ring in brain areas related to the learned association decreases over the course of extinction.
