Module 13. 1 the power of the situation: social influences on behaviour. Philip zimbardo believes wrong actions aren"t solely the fault of individual perpetrators, but also of situational forces. Social psychologists study the interaction between the person and the situation. Kurt lewin (key founder, and grandfather of social psychology) expressed this insight as b=f (p, e) ~behaviour is a function of the person and the environment. We are influenced by the people around us. Mimicry: taking on for ourselves the behaviours, emotional displays, and facial expressions of others. Naturally, as social creatures, we pay attention to our surroundings, and go with the flow . A lot of what we do is a conscious effort, but at the same time, we do many things unconsciously. ~implicit actions of attention, perception, emotions, and behaviours. Our unconscious level of our awareness is constantly shaped and patterned by other people.
