Self-narratives are built as we live our lives. Our understanding of the social world, including ourselves, is often shaped by contrual processes. Our lack of self insight is due to our strong motives. There are things we would rather not know. Recent research suggests that other people can be good sources of knowldge about ourselves. Contrary to the assumption that we know ourselves the best, they found that the reports of close others are as accurate as our own in anticipating our actual behavior. There are different aspects to ourselves that we may uniquely know and others that only other people around us would know. Self-schema - a cognitive structure, derives from past experience, that represents a person"s beliefs and feelings about the self in general and in specific situations. These self-schemas differ in content and how elaborate it is. They also help organize and navigate all the information in everyday life.
