PSYB45H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 26: Verbal Behavior, Reinforcement, Applied Behavior Analysis
Document Summary
Behaviour mod- ch 26: rule-governed & verbal behaviour. Using words= important in many ways for humans-> e. g. : can use words to govern behaviour + express ideas/desires. Language= sets humans apart from other animals-> makes extensive knowledge, understanding, problem-solving, complex social interactions all possible. Language= central role in human life; so behaviour analysts try to use it-> promote desired behaviours & helping patients get language skills so they can function more effectively in life. In applied behaviour analysis-> rule= verbal statement of contingency-> involves antecedent, behaviour. So rule states that certain behaviour= likely when person performs a behaviour under specific antecedent condition. E. g. : (cid:862)i(cid:374) (cid:272)ase of fi(cid:396)e, use stai(cid:396)s to es(cid:272)ape(cid:863)-> antecedent= fire; behaviour= use stairs; consequence= negative reinforcement, of escaping fire & threat of injury. For ppl w/sufficient language skills-> using rules= efficient in 2 ways: Can respond in accordance w/specified contingencies abt unpleasant consequences-> so can avoid actually experiencing the unpleasantness.
