Chapter 15 Differential Reinforcement
Differential reinforcement of alternative behaviour (DRA): behavioural procedure used to
increase the frequency of a desirable behaviour and to decrease the frequency of
undesirable behaviours.
Differential reinforcement of an incompatible behaviour (DRI): the alternative behaviour is
physically incompatible with the problem behaviour and therefore, the two behaviours cant
occur at the same time
Differential reinforcement of communication (DRC) or Functional communication training:
the individual learns to make a communication response that is functionally equivalent to
the problem behaviour
Differential reinforcement of other behaviour (DRO): reinforcing the absence of the problem
behaviour
Whole Interval DRO: the problem behaviour must be absent for the whole interval for the
reinforcer to be delivered
Momentary DRO: the problem behaviour must be absent at the end of the interval for the
reinforcer to be delivered
Differential reinforcement of low rates of responding (DRL): unlike DRO, you dont reinforce
the absence of the behaviour, rather, you reinforce a lower rate of the problem behaviour
Full session DRL: reinforcement is delivered if fewer than a specified number of responses
occurs in a period of time
Spaced responding DRL: there must a specified amount of time between responses for the
reinforcer to be delivered
Interval DRL: involves dividing a session into intervals and providing the reinforcer if no
more than one response occurred in each interval
Stereotypic behaviour: a repetitive behaviour that doesnt serve any social function for the
person
