There are about 19,000 protein-encoding genes in the human genome: humans and other creatures differ in the rate of expression of genes in the brain. We are uniquely human due to our proteome: proteome- the set of proteins encoded and expressed by the genome. You have the same dna in each of the 100 trillion cells in your body except for red blood cells, sperm cells, and egg cells. Genes could be turned on or off: turned off genes are free to produce the proteins needed to build a particular type of cell. Each cell consists of instructions for an entire human organism, but only a subset of instructions is expressed at any given time and location. One pair of chromosome is by your mother (via her egg) and your father (via sperm)
