PSYB65H3 Chapter 16: Chapter 16 - Detailed Notes
Document Summary
Function and utility of autopsy provides insight into how diseases affect human beings along with insight into how person died. Two ways in which neurons/cells die: necrosis - overwhelming failure to maintain homeostasis within neuron - homicide, apoptosis - programmed cell death - suicide. Swelling of membrane & bursting (lysis: neurons completely lose their ability to regulate their internal env"t, neuron"s contents spill out into extracellular fluid = death of neuron, associate with rapid damage. Possible causes: can also follow damage that is slow and progressive. Tumors, blows to the head, infenction, ischemia damage to secondary areas due to stroke, or neurodegenerative diseases (huntington"s chorea: common causes, ischemia, disrupt energy pathways, changes in ion channel concentration. Ischemia: disruption in blood flow that results from a stoke or cva: atp, reduces production of atp essential to sodium-potassium pump. Inability to regulate these levels after action potential. In turn, affects water & calcium, high concentrations of water leading to swelling.
