Document Summary
People communicate emotions via non-verbally by expressions, gestures, & touch, and verbally in what we say and how we say it. Men roll their shoulders and raise their arms with exaggerated gestures to show off signs of their social status their well-developed arms or flashy watches. People express emotions with facial actions, with their voice, touch, posture, and with their gait. The communication of emotion occurs in different channels. Often, single words like smile fail to describe the language of nonverbal communication. Paul ekman & wallace friesen organized nonverbal behavior into five categories: emblems: nonverbal gestures that directly translate to words. For english speakers, these include the peace sign; clenched fist indicated black. Emblems vary in their meanings across cultures i. e. , the gesture of extending the index finger and little finger of one hand toward someone indicates contempt in. All four gestures have comparable meanings, except for being made with fingers, they share few morphological features.
