Directive interview interviewer directs, guides, and controls course of interview; narrow and restricted; focuses on specific areas; more like a selection interview for employment because they"re looking to elicit certain kinds of info. Nondirective interview patient determines direction of the interview and talks about the things they want to talk about, interviewer rarely asks questions; more like a diagnostic interview that is centered on emotional functioning rather than qualifications. Interview is a method for gathering data or info about individual; info is then used to describe individual, make future predictions, or both. Similarities between interview and test: method for gathering data, used to make predictions, evaluated in terms of validity and reliability, group or individual, structured or unstructured. Many types of interview procedures and you choose the one that gets you the info you"re looking for and achieves your goals. Some tests, e. g. tat, can"t be used properly without interview data.
