PSYC39H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: General Strain Theory, Forensic Psychiatry, Differential Association
Document Summary
Crime - conduct or failure to act in violation of the law forbidding or commanding it, and for which a ra ange of possible penalties exist upon conviction. Criminal behaviour - behaviour in violation of the criminal code. To be convicted of a crime a person must have acted intentionally and without justification or an excuse. Root causes of crime: reducing economic inequality, improving education opportunities, offering substance abuse treatment. This all requires public commitment, energy and financial resources. Theory term is used loosely in everyday life to describe personal experiences, observations, traditional beliefs, set of opinions or a collection of abstract thoughts. Just-word hypothesis - belief that one gets what they deserve in this world. Two tracks: belief in a general just world and belief in a personal just world. Personal just world: adaptive and helpful in coping with dire circumstances in ones life.
