Freud: used the unconscious in his theory effectively; psychoanalysis & the psychoanalytic movement. One of the many critics of freud"s psychoanalytic theory/movement was carl jung. Even though jung"s theory also emphasized the role of the unconscious, it emphasized its more positive, spiritual aspects in a way that some found inspiring. No single definition of the word unconscious" b/c it meant so many different things to different people at different times. The oxford english dictionary gives 4 basic definitions: Not conscious or knowing within oneself; unaware, regardless, heedless". Not characterized by, or endowed with, the faculty or presence of consciousness". Not realized or known as existing in oneself". Not attended by, or present to, consciousness; performed without conscious action. They do shade with one another; but have far-reaching consequences for both theory & practice. Meaning #1: not conscious or knowing within oneself; unaware, regardless, heedless". Refer to those beings that lack consciousness entirely;
