Freud and jung became a household names in the 20th century because of their invocation of the. Psychoanalysis emphasized the role of unconscious processes in such diverse phenomena as dreams, psychopathological symptoms, and religion, and the unconscious, to many, appeared to be an explanatory framework of great power. Although jung"s theory also emphasized the role of the unconscious, it emphasized its more positive, spiritual aspects in a way that many found arcane but that others found inspiring. There is no single definition of unconscious because it has meant so many different things to different people at different times. In the entry for unconscious the oxford english dictionary (1989) gives four basic definitions: Not conscious or knowing within oneself; unaware, regardless, heedless . Not characterized by, or endowed with, the faculty or presence of consciousness . Not realized or known as existing in oneself . Not attended by, or present to, consciousness; performed without conscious action .
