PSYB45: Chapter Twenty Five Cognitive Behaviour Modification Cognitive Behaviour Modification: used to help people change behaviours that are labeled as cognitive Cognitive behaviour: verbal or imaginal responses made by the person that are covert, and thus not observable to others A label for the cognitive behaviour is not a behavioural definition Cognitive Restructuring Designed to replace specific maladaptive cognitive behaviours with more adaptive ones; used in the case of behavioural excesses, that is, when existing maladaptive cognitive behaviours contribute to a problem Cognitive Restructuring: Three basic steps: 1. Helping the client identify the distressing thoughts and the situations in which they occur 2. Helping the client identify the emotional response, unpleasant mood, or problem behaviour that follows the distressing thought 3.
