Document Summary
Chapter 7: scatterplots, association and correlation (p. 168) Plot values of two quantitative variables against each other. e. g. the airport in oakland, california recorded the number of passengers departing in each month from 1990 to 2006. *as it goes up, the number of passengers goes up -> positive association (curve up) *outliner/subgroups -> standing away from the overall pattern. *y-axis -> runs up and down x-axis -> runs side to side. Seasonal trends within year -> some very high. If the association is a line, can calculate a number to describe how near a line the points are: correlation (coefficient). In between means in between: 1 means perfect positive (uphill) association, 0 means no (linear) association at all. *as correlation goes up, stronger trends, clearer graph. Scatterplot of marijuana use vs. other drug use for different countries: Describe what you see on the scatterplot (form, direction, strength).
