Document Summary
Most lived within a short distance from the mediterranean sea. Those who lived further inland relied on the rain to water their crops, and so water became an important part of their culture. Greek weather similar to now, warm, dry summers, cool winters, rare snow in december and february. With unpredictable rain, crops often failed to give more than they costed. High birth rate, but high child mortality, and low life expectancy. After the dark ages, mortality lowered, resulting in an increasing population. So likely not the cause of the population increase. Larger amounts of people emigrated, so migration would not be the cause of the population spike. As no toiletry systems were in place, spreading of diseases through excrement was a common place occurrence. While by our standards their health care system was poor, in comparison to other cities at the time, it was advanced.
