Document Summary

Problem solving: accomplishing a goal when the solution or path to the solution is not clear. Many contain obstacles that interfere with our ability to reach our goals. Two common techniques that we use; one more objective, logical, slower, the other more subjective, intuitive, and quicker. Rely on algorithms when thinking logically, problem-solving strategies based on series of rules. Heuristics: problem-solving strategies that stem from prior experiences and provide an educated guess as to what is the most likely solution. In some cases, useful to start off with one type and switch to the other. Having a routine solution available generally allows us to solve a problem with less effort, however, sometimes they may impose cognitive barriers that impede problem-solving if circumstances change. Mental set: a cognitive obstacle that occurs when an individual attempts to apply a routine solution to what is actually a new type of problem.
