Objective measurements: measure of something that, within acceptable margin of error, is consistent across observers. Operational definition: a consistent way of measuring the variable in the given circumstance: ex. Depression- operationally defined as a score (consistent measurement) of 21 or higher on the beck depression inventory (context) Validity: degree to which procedure measures what it claims to measure: ex. Beck depression inventory- the questions cannot just be random questions, they have to actually elucidate the person"s state of mind: ecological validity: results of a laboratory stud ca be applied to / repeated in the environment. Reliability: provides consistent and stable answers across multiple observations and points in time: test-test reliability: does taking the test multiple times affect your score.
