Document Summary
3. 3 structure and organization of the nervous system. Different parts of the brain- related to different function. Peripheral nervous system: transmits signals b/w brain & body. Somatic nervous system: control skeletal muscles voluntary & reflexive movements. Autonomic nervous system: regulates organ & glandular activities: sympathetic nervous system: fight-or-flight response. Increased heart rate, dilated pupils, decreased salivary flow: parasympathetic nervous system: maintains homeostatic balance. Helps calm down after sympathetic system scare. Cerebral hemisphere: the two halves of the brain. All parts of the brain are connected- each structure influences another. Brain stem: located at the bottom of the brain: pons: mediates general wakefulness levels & influences dreaming. Many connections w/ other brain structures & spinal cord, also involved in networks controlling balance, eye movements, swallowing: medulla: connects with the body to perform basic functions that body has little control over (breathing, salivating, heart beating)
