Document Summary
Storage: time and manner in which info is retained between encoding and retrieval. It is not how long we rehearse info, but rather how we rehearse it that determines how effective the memory is. Maintenance rehearsal: prolonging exposure to info by repeating it. Elaborative rehearsal: prolonging exposure to info by thinking about its meaning. This framework begins with understanding that our ability to recall info is most directly related to how that info was initially processed. Processing can be described as a continuum ranging from shallow to deep processing. Shallow processing involves more superficial properties of a stimulus (sound or spelling out words) Deep processing is related to a(cid:374) ite(cid:373)"s (cid:373)ea(cid:374)i(cid:374)g or fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374) (asso(cid:272)iated (cid:449)ith (cid:271)etter rete(cid:374)tio(cid:374) a(cid:374)d retrieval): self reference effect. Think about info in terms of how it relates to you or how it is useful to you: survival processing identifying ways in which the info aided in your survival.
