Document Summary

Emotion: behaviour with the following 3 components: subjective thought and/or experience with , accompanying patterns of neural activity and physical arousal and , an observable behavioural expression. Two-factor theory: patterns of physical arousal and the cognitive labels we attach to them form basis of emotional experiences. Physical arousal is first factor that comes into play and along with this comes cognitive label for the experience (ex: i am sad) Firing associated with one stage of emotional response will influence patterns of firing associated with subsequent stages of that response. Amygdala: fires when we perceive stimuli that are emotionally arousing, and is sensitive to fear-relevant images & sounds. Projections to other brain areas leads to observable behaviours. Stimulates activity in sensory areas so they fire more than they would for a non-emotional stimulus. Sympathetic system: helps recruit energy to prepare for response. Parasympathetic system: helps preserve energy and calms you down if no response is necessary.
