Document Summary
10. 2 infancy and childhood: cognitive and emotional development. Piaget tested his children from infancy to adolescence, his work made foundation of cognitive development, the study of changes in memory, thought, and reasoning processes that occur throughout the lifespan. Knowledge accumulates and is modified by two processes, assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation, conservative process whereby people fit new information into the belief systems they already have. Kids think all girls have long hair and examples of this pattern assimilate to current understanding. Accommodation, creative process whereby people modify their belief structures based on experience. Cognitive development passes through four distinct stages from birth to early adolescence: sensorimotor, per operational, concrete operational, and the former operational stage. Sensorimotor (0-2), direct, sensory experience with the world as well as motor movements that allowed infants to interact with the world, object permanence is significant developmental milestone for stage.
